The city dock is on the far west side of what local residents refer to as the "Old Boat Harbor" to distinguish it from "the new boat harbor" a modern facility build just to the west by the State Ports Authority in the late 1960's.

The Old Harbor has been the center of commercial and charter boat fishing activities since the time of hurricane Hazel. The power of Hurricane Hazel in 1954 destroyed the commercial fishing docks built on the river. After the storm several of the shrimp packing houses were rebuilt on the "Old Harbor".

The dock was build by the city for the use of commercial fishermen and residents in the early 1970's. Pictures of harbor by Art Newton made available by Mr. John Lewis
